A refreshing restorative cooler, the Starlight is the perfect tipple to be enjoyed poolside, complementing whatever comes off the grill or elegant enough to sit and the dining room table. Mom's sure to approve either way!


For the fresh lemon sour:

  • 2 parts fresh lemon juice
  • 1 part simple syrup

For the cocktail:

  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce Cointreau
  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed orange juice
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon sour
  • Ice
  • Chilled soda water
  • ½ ounce Germain-Robin VSOP brandy


For the fresh lemon sour:

Mix the fresh lemon juice (filter to make sure there are no seeds) with simple syrup. Ideally, lemon sour should be made the day you plan to use it, but will keep refrigerated in a clean bottle for up to three days.

For the cocktail:

In a mixing glass, add Campari, Cointreau, orange juice, and fresh lemon sour. Shake with ice until well blended.

Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass, spritz with chilled soda water and stir gently. Top with a float of brandy. Make sure not to serve this with a straw, to enable the drinker to enjoy the brandy floating on top.

The Cable Car Cocktail

The Cable Car is an excellent rum sour. The cocktail was created by Tony Abou-Ganim, the Modern Mixologist, and is considered by many to be a modern classic. It is certainly a drink that bartenders should know. The drink's name was inspired by the cable car tracks near the Starlight Room in San Fransisco where Abou-Ganim first created the cocktail.

This is a very simple cocktail recipe and requires just three ingredients. It is also one of the fanciest drinks you will find to feature Captain Morgan, which will make fans of the famous spiced rum very happy.

The Cable Car is a sour drink and you will notice that this recipe uses equal parts spiced rum and lemon sour. The two offset each other and the sour mix includes simple syrup. Between that and the curacao (Marie Brizard is recommended), there is a nice sweetness to bring the drink into perfect balance. It is quite interesting how all of these elements contrast and complement at the same time.

This is a rum cocktail that can work for any occasion. It can warm you up on a chilly evening after work or cool you down after a hot day in the sun. It is a perfect drink and I recommend following his recipe exactly to get a real taste of his intentions.

Prickly Pear Margarita (Starlight Theatre)

Texas Monthly magazine published the batched-version of the prickly pear margarita served at the super cool Starlight Theater Restaurant & Saloon in Terlingua as Starlight Theater's Prickly Pear’ita . We adapted it for one. Look for prickly pear syrup or nectar that has real sugar. Avoid the cheap stuff with corn syrup.

  1. Mix together the tequila, prickly pear syrup, simple syrup and lime juice in a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake vigorously and strain into a collins glass filled with ice cubes.
  3. Some folks rub the rim of each glass with a cut lime wedge and dip the rim into salt to coat it thoroughly.
  4. Makes 1 delicious margarita.

NOTE: I like this recipe over other prickly pear margarita recipes because it does not include the traditional orange liqueur. Savor the flavor of cactus!

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup milk
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

Beat all ingredients in large bowl on medium speed, scraping bowl constantly, until blended, about 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 3 minutes.

Pour into paper-lined medium muffin cups, 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches, filling each half full. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes.

Can You Put Fruit In Whiskey Sours?

Whiskey and blackberries go hand in hand to me. It might not be an obvious pairing, but it is amazing. So let&rsquos mix up some of these Blackberry Whiskey Sours that I made up for Food Fanatic!

I love the traditional food and drink recipes that go along with any season, but I also love trying out new ingredients and switching things around a little.

It&rsquos just turned to Spring, though I think someone needs to remind Mother Nature. It was 15 degrees this morning at 6 am. Do I still live in New Jersey?? I mean, seriously, my deck boards were popping and there was an inch of snow on the ground. Hello April 1st.

Anyway, when I was looking around for in season fruit or berries the one that stood out were the blackberries. They look perfect no matter what season you&rsquore in. The strawberries and raspberries had seen better days.

We Just Discovered Sangrita and It ' s Absolutely Glorious

Deciding on a cocktail is hard. That's why we combined two of our favorites into one. Meet sangrita. It's part sangria and part margarita, so you won't have to choose between the two ever again.

1½ cups orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed

¾ cup lime juice, preferably freshly squeezed

1 bottle red wine (sweet or dry--whichever you prefer)

Lime Sugar Garnish

Ice, as needed for serving

1. Make the Sangrita: In a large pitcher, stir the orange juice with the lime juice, tequila, triple sec and wine to combine. Chill until ready to serve.

2. Make the Lime Sugar Garnish: On a small plate wide enough to fit the rim of your serving glasses, stir the sugar with the lime zest to combine.

3. When you&rsquore ready to serve, pour the water onto another small plate wide enough to fit the rim of your serving glasses. Dip each glass into the water and then into the lime sugar.

The Berry Bible Book

We found this strawberry mojito in The Berry Bible and were a bit hesitant to stray from the beloved, classic mojito. We even add true Cuban rum to our mojito cocktails. That&rsquos how true our to their origins our mojitos are. But wow, we were really pleased with how wonderful the drinks were with some crushed strawberries. Strawberry mojitos are fabulous!

We&rsquove found a new favorite, this Strawberry Mojito Cocktail. Classic mojitos with a few muddled strawberries and bright lime juice adds a fresh, fruity spectacle to the cocktail. They&rsquore also beauty in a glass too with the combinations of crushed strawberries and mint leaves. Strawberry mojitos are perfect for our new Summer cocktail repertoire and we can&rsquot wait to debut them at our garden party next month!
